Today, the House of Representatives voted to replace the Affordable Care Act with a plan that would allow insurance companies to categorize rape as a pre-existing health condition.
We ask you today to call your Senators and urge them to vote ‘No’ on the American Health Care Act.
Call your U.S. Senators today and tell them:
- The American Health Care Act will not serve all Americans well. In fact, it will harm our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians.
- This act removes important protections for people with "pre-existing conditions"-- including health conditions resulting from rape and other violent crimes. Crime victims will shoulder an unfair burden of higher health care premiums and costs. Rape is not a pre-existing condition. It is a crime. Victims should never have to face higher health care costs because of their assaults.
- The bill's cuts in subsidies and Medicaid will harm millions of children, people with disabilities, elders and low-income families. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in Pennsylvania, 1 in 7 adults, 2 in 5 children, 3 in 5 nursing home residents, and 1 in 2 people with disabilities are covered by Medicaid. Cuts to this program will leave the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians without access to affordable health care.
- We know that many victims of sexual violence also receive Medicaid because of the long-term economic ripple effects of trauma. Support victims of sexual assault and vote “No” to removing critical protections for sexual assault survivors in the American Health Care Act.
