Understanding Sexual Violence
Understanding Sexual Violence is the First Step.
Sexual violence is a breach of trust and safety that occurs anytime a person
is forced, coerced and/or manipulated into any unwanted sexual activity.
This can include rape, incest, child sexual assault, ritual abuse, date and
acquaintance rape, statutory rape, marital or partner rape, sexual exploitation,
sexual contact, sexual harassment, exposure and voyeurism. Sexual violence
is a crime motivated by control, not desire.
It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. The more than people understand how common the problem really is, the easier it is to talk about, allowing victims to heal and helping to prevent sexual violence by raising awareness.
What Factors Contribute to the Problem?
There are many factors that contribute to the problem of sexual violence, but
none that justify it. It is never a victim’s fault. By being aware
of these personal and societal factors, however, we can work toward a world
free of sexual violence.
