Diversity

Diverse communities are affected by sexual violence in distinct and devastating ways. Since no individual is defined by one or more characteristics, each person is affected by both oppression--such as racism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, etc.--and victimization uniquely. It can be said that each form of oppression depletes power, and increases the risk for victimization. While oppression can increase risk for sexual violence, there are tremendous strengths and resources among diverse communities. The experiences of diverse populations must inform efforts to address and end sexual violence. Therefore, any efforts to end sexual violence also work toward eliminating oppression of all forms.

Business Plan for Cultural Competency
PCAR believes that the strengths and needs of diverse persons must guide its efforts, from grassroots outreach and services to state and nationwide public policy and systems change. This business plan has two goals:  to help our contractors understand why a commitment to cultural competency is important and to offer ways to implement such a plan.

If you would like more information on cultural competence or diversity issues around sexual violence, please contact PCAR’s Outreach Coordinator at 1-800-692-7445 or contact us here.

PCAR recognizes addresses diversity in a number of ways. We have created numerous resources around working with and outreach to under/unserved populations. Please note that many of these issues overlap for victims; the categorization of these resources was for the ease of efficient perusal.
